Thorium-227 is used in targeted alpha therapy, where its strong alpha emissions are directed specifically at tumor cells using attached antibodies or ligands. As it decays, it produces additional short-lived alpha-emitting daughter isotopes, which contribute further to the therapeutic effect by delivering multiple rounds of cell-damaging radiation to the targeted tissue.
